Using Simple’s service to power your smartphone is a no-brainer with its promises of “Truly Unlimited” high-speed data, talk, and text at a price that’s lower than what you’d pay at a major carrier. In reality, sifting through the details of those plans isn’t as straightforward as it seems.
Simple Mobile Phone uses what network?
A mobile virtual network operator or MVNO, a simple mobile phone is owned by TracFone Wireless (the same company that operates Page Plus and Straight Talk). In other words, it does not own and operate its own cell towers. Rather than owning its own towers, Simple Mobile leases space on a carrier’s network. The carrier in Simple’s case is T-Mobile. That’s good news in theory. The T-Mobile network performed well in our recent tests of LTE network speed, finishing around the same as AT&T’s. (Verizon is faster than both), so Simple customers should benefit from T-Mobile’s network, and, according to some independent simple mobile phone speed tests found online, they do. The company cautions, however, that “actual availability, coverage, and speed [of its network] may vary” from what T-Mobile customers experience. Therefore, Simple Mobile customers will experience slower speeds if T-Mobile’s network is congested. There is nothing unusual about that for prepaid carriers (T-Mobile’s Metro carries the same caveat), but it’s something to keep in mind.
Simple Mobile supports what types of phones?
You will need a GSM-capable phone to use Simple Mobile since it operates on T-Mobile’s GSM wireless network. Unlocked GSM phones work on most networks. Keeping your current phone means buying a Simple Mobile SIM card for 99 cents, available everywhere from Best Buy to CVS or online at the company’s website. The company’s website has a compatibility checker, but you can’t enter your phone’s IMEI number. This can then be inserted into any unlocked phone that supports GSM.
It is also possible to buy a phone from Simple Mobile’s website or authorized stores around the country if you do not want to bring your own. All budget Android phones and the new iPhone XS are on sale, including open-box discounted models. Simple Mobile’s installment plans include a financing charge, so make sure you buy your phone outright, as it’s about the same price as other carriers. Over 24 months, the carrier charges $749 for an iPhone XR, which is its typical asking price, but the monthly payments of $37.03 add up to $888.72.

It appears that the previous allotment of 6GB of data has been permanently increased to 10GB for $40 a month as part of the third-tiered plan. For a while, Simple Mobile had increased its tiered plan to 12GB as part of a limited-time promotion – something that happens frequently with Simple’s plans.
